SMAP's Shingo Katori starred in 2009 live-action TV version of police story.

This year's combined 36/37th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is announcing on Monday that a new film based on the live-action version of Osamu Akimoto's Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo ("Kochikame") police comedy manga has been green-lit. More information will be provided in future issues of the magazine. SMAP band member Shingo Katori starred in the 2009 live-action television version as the hapless police officer Ryōtsu Kankichi.

Akimoto has been creating the original manga for nearly 34 years, and the 170th compiled book volume shipped in June. The manga already inspired a 1977 live-action film with director Kazuhiko Yamaguchi and actor Mitsuo Senda in the lead role. There was also a 1985 television anime special, a 1996-2004 television anime series, and two anime films.

Update: The Nikkan Sports newspaper reports that the film, tentatively titled Kochikame the Movie: Kachidoki-bashi o Fūsase yo! (Kochikame the Movie: Blockade Kachidoki Bridge!), will open next summer.
