Mori no Asagao Manga on Capital Punishment Gets TV Show
Live-action series of Mamora Gōda's story about rookie prison guard, death row felon.

This year's 16th issue of Futabasha's Manga Action magazine has announced on Tuesday that a live-action television series adaptation of Mamora Gōda's Mori no Asagao manga has been green-lit. The manga revolves around the secret friendship between a rookie prison guard and a death row felon. Gōda won the Grand Prize in the Manga Division of the 2007 (11th) Japan Media Arts Festival Awards for his portrayal of the modern Japanese capital punishment system. The television series is slated for an October premiere on the TV Tokyo network, and Manga Action will reveal the cast, timeslot, and other details as they are announced.

Gōda serialized Mori no Asagao in Manga Action between 2004 and 2007, and its seven compiled volumes have sold over 250,000 copies. Gōda will launch a new four-chapter mini-series spinoff in this year's 18th issue of Manga Action on September 7. Gōda also created the Kirakira Hikaru manga about a young female forensics examiner, and that manga was adapted into a television drama. Gōda's current manga series, Hoshikuzu no Shōnen-tachi e, has gone on hiatus as of the current issue of Manga Action, but it will return in the 22nd issue on November 2.

Manga Action had announced last year that Jirō Shōno (Tegami, Beautiful Life) would direct a movie version of Mori no Asagao, but no further developments on that project have been announced since then.
